PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Compliance
In 2017, the Westchester County Department of Correction became the first County Jail in New York State to proudly achieved full compliance following a federal audit under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)—a significant milestone that reflects our unwavering commitment to safety, accountability, and excellence. PREA establishes rigorous national standards to ensure that detention facilities actively prevent, detect, and respond to any form of sexual misconduct involving individuals in custody.
By fully integrating all 43 PREA standards into our daily operations, we have strengthened facility-wide safety, enhanced operational performance, and fostered a more respectful, secure environment for both staff and residents.
In February 2026 the department completed a successful audit and recertification. This second recertification not only affirms our compliance but also highlights our leadership in the space—exceeding three PREA standards while meeting all requirements. This achievement underscores our dedication to going beyond minimum standards to create a culture of integrity, professionalism, and care.
Pursuant to federal regulations, Westchester’s PREA audit is accessible online.
